TNA Hardcore Justice: one more stand, again

Might as well be another Final Fantasy video game, because this promotion just won't die.Last stand #1938...

The internet is buzzing with TNA’s latest plan: another ECW tribute show. The angle has been brewing for weeks now, starting with Tommy Dreamer appearing in the crowd at the Impact Zone, and returning with ECW alumni at his side. Most recently, the “ECW Originals” jumped the railing and began a brawl against the TNA roster. That broadcast of Impact ended with Dixie Carter telling the roster, “Stop! I invited them.”

The next broadcast ended with an ‘explanation’ segment and Dreamer requesting to have one last shot for the ECW cronies to shine. Carter agreed, under one condition: Dreamer has full control. No TNA, just ECW.

The problem with something like this buzzing through the internet is the tendency of internet wrestling fans to over-analyze and criticize every little thing. Now, to be fair, putting your hard-working roster completely on-hold to have one last grasp on the glory days of a long-defunct promotion isn’t great business.

Raw Review: Miz/Sheamus, Cena/Nexus, Bret Hart returns…again

The Hitman returns to Raw to announce his first SummerSlam match since 1997.

I really enjoyed Raw this week. Normally I can’t stand it, but it really was a solid show. I don’t know if it’s because they are beginning to build up hard for their second-biggest show of the year, SummerSlam, but whatever. It’s working.

The show started with a high-octane, pay-per-view caliber triple threat match between Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, and Edge to determine Sheamus’s opponent at SummerSlam. For free TV, it was a damn good match, and it was followed up with  a great altercation involving Nexus and the ‘odd couple’ of Edge and Jericho. Jericho called out Edge, and they were either hinting at an all-out feud or the formation of a team. I’m not really sure. Either way, they tried to out-heel eachother by claiming that they could lead Nexus.

Nexus’ music hits, and they deliver a beatdown to Edge. Jericho puts Edge in the Walls of Jericho and realizes Nexus wants him, too. Jericho takes a beatdown of his own. Another great Nexus angle that showcases the young stars. WWE is doing a fantastic job of creating seven menacing young stars, seemingly out of thin air.

My thoughts on WWE’s first Money in the Bank pay-per-view event

Money in the Bank 2010

I’ll be the first to admit being wrong about this event. Well, mostly wrong. It looked bad on paper, and I had no interest in seeing it. The Money in the Bank matches just didn’t look ‘right’ for some reason, and the championship matches had even less appeal. I mean, Randy Orton in a Money in the Bank match? Weird.

If you need a quick reminder of the main attractions on this card, check it out at MidcardMainstays. Or, just check this video out. It doesn’t have the Women’s matches or the Tag Team Title match, but that’s OK–I just told you they happened.

First of all, the Money in the Bank matches WORKED. They turned out far better than I expected, and by the time the Smackdown match was through, I felt like I was watching WrestleMania. I had that “holy crap, this isn’t even a main event” feeling. Big Show once again showed the WWE Universe why he is hands down the best ‘big-man’ worker in the business. I give applause to WWE Creative for writing a pretty compelling match that could be one of the best of all-time. (Best of the Money in the Bank ladder matches, I mean.) Continue reading

John Cena and Sheamus join forces to close somewhat watchable episode of WWE Raw

I did it. I managed to sit through most of another episode of WWE Raw. Much to my surprise, it wasn’t all that bad, for once. However, I do believe I deserve a medal, a cookie, the Intercontinental Championship, or a TNA contract for my efforts.

WWE decided to mix things up, and showed the WWE Universe that the anonymous GM has a rather unique vision for certain titles.

As a way of reprimanding Alicia Fox for her shady tactics in a previous match against Eve Torres, Fox was added to the main event, making it a six-on-two intergender handicap match. The icing on the cake: the winner of the pinfall wins the Divas Championship. Smarks around the world grunted in disbelief, knowing John Cena was getting yet another shot a WWE belt, but the world kept watching.

Michael Cole announces Cena's tag team partner for the main event.

The match went just as expected, with Super Cena overcoming all odds and gaining the pinfall victory. Your new Divas champion, John Cena. Continue reading

TNA’s huge news, my huge news

First I’ll let my announcements out first. In tribute to TNA’s promotional tactics, I thought I would hype up these changes as much as possible and leave readers disappointed, saying, “that’s it?”

New additions to the site:

  • New layout: I get bored, and the previous layout was nice but it was starting to look like I was targeting kindergartners as a major demographic with all of the primary colors.
  • Commenting system through Disqus: I hadn’t been getting too many comments despite a solid stream of traffic, but I decided to revamp the commenting methods to make them more “Web 2.0-friendly.” You can now log in through Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo, or Disqus to make your comments. And I encourage all to do so. Unless you’re a spammer, of course.
  • Google Friend Connect: In an effort to start to build up a “community,” I added GFC functionality. If you read your blogs through GFC, feel free to follow me through the widget shown in the sidebar at the time of this posting.
  • Goodle Ads: I really hate ads, but I’m a fan of money. I am interested in obtaining more of it, so Ads are my friend at the moment. One thing you will never see, however, are pop-ups or keyword mouseover ads. If you ever do, kindly redirect me to this post so I can kick my own ass.
  • Like buttons. Now, you can ‘like’ a post via Facebook if you are logged on. Facebook is pretty popular these days, so why not? And you like my posts, don’t you?

Now for the big announcement.
After much hesitation, delay, and needless hype, I am proud to announce…

Our new head writer: Paul Heyman.

Our new head writer: Paul Heyman.

Just kidding. Would be nice, but he wanted full control of the site. I respectfully declined.

However, I do plan to move to a new domain. Currently, the #1 idea in mind is “Sweet Blog Of Mine,” a 100% music-focused blog. The wrestling content will remain here until I decide to take on the challenge of thinking of a witty (and not-yet-taken) wrestling domain name.

Now for some Total Non-stop Aggravation. I watched some of Victory Road 2010 last night, excited to learn TNA’s “huge news.” Like everyone else, I thought it was finally going to be an announcement that Paul Heyman had signed on as the new head of the creative team. Just a few months ago, Heyman was Tweeting up a storm about TNA’s booking.

Not so fast.

WrestleMania 26: Four main events, Money in the Bank, and more

Wrestemania 26As March begins, wrestling fans around the world eagerly begin the trek on the ‘road to WrestleMania.’ This year’s offering from World Wrestling Entertainment’s sports-entertainment extravaganza on March 28 includes match-ups that are new and fresh, pulling away from the rather stale we’ve-seen-this-before feeling of seeing the same matches every week on Raw or Smackdown.

This year’s Super-Bowl-of-professional-wrestling boasts not one but four main events. Fresh off a Royal Rumble victory in January, Edge challenges former tag-team partner Chris Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship, Smackdown’s main event title.

Beer & Horsemen a Better Pairing Than Flair & Styles: What TNA Should Have Done

Flair would have been better paired with Robert Roode.

Flair would have been better paired with Robert Roode.

According to Hulk Hogan, AJ Styles ‘needed character,’ and I don’t disagree. I do however disagree with the choice to pair Styles with Ric Flair, rehashing the ‘Nature Boy’ gimmick and essentially passing the torch.

The program has been great so far, but I think someone else could have benefited from it more greatly than Styles, and Styles should have gone in a different direction.

Let’s face it, Styles is rather bland as a babyface, and while he may be over with the IWC and the smarks at the Impact Zone, he never had a chance at becoming a household name without intervention.

Something just isn’t right about Styles adopting the Ric Flair persona. For starters, he’s married. Second, no one can pull off a ‘Wooo’ quite like Flair himself. Styles doesn’t have the right type of charisma needed for that role, and the aftereffect is that it sometimes comes off as comedic, rather than the serious style that the Horsemen used to present.

WWE NXT season 2 mentors: a hardcore one, a worm, and a rocker

Bob Holly's career could be rejuvenated if chosen as a mentor for season two of NXT.

Bob Holly's career could be rejuvenated if chosen as a mentor for season two of NXT.

I’m in the middle of re-watching the June 26 2006 episode of ECW on SciFi, which featured an Extreme Rules match between Rob Van Dam and Bob ‘Hardcore’ Holly. This was the match that earned Holly a boat-load of respect, as he received a nasty gash across his match in a table spot near the midpoint of the match.

With blood gushing from the visibly deep wound, Holly showed fans just how ‘Hardcore’ he truly was, working the rest of the match, and becoming one of the few ‘WWE guys’ to truly do the modern ECW banner justice.

While I’m not advocating a bloodbath every week on Tuesday nights in order to earn respect, I think he did deserve some recognition for the small part he played in the short-lived run of ECW’s second time around.

Bob Holly was released from WWE in January 2009, and ECW was finally laid to rest last month, with the new pseudo-reality show “NXT” taking its place. NXT teams up 8 rookies with 8 ‘pros’ in an innovative effort to build eight stars at once. Some of the pros chosen are a little questionable, but they provide a spot for WWE stars that don’t really have anything else going for them. Continue reading

Jan 4 Impact semi-live report: “Time for Change” …and Hulkamania!

ImpactYou know the hype, so I will just jump into the action.

Impact began with an 8 person Asylum cage match. A lot of people seem to dislike the Asylum cage, and I can understand why, but I don’t mind it. Aside from looking like an Elimination Chamber ripoff, it reminds me of the old blue WWF cage. What they have to remember, though, six sides of anything is going to need extra reinforcement compared to four sides, so this means more obstructed views from the fan’s perspective in the crowd.

The match ended with Homicide taking out the other secen participants, which prompted a ‘no contest’ decision from the referee. Much to no one’s surprise, the decision earned a ‘bullshit’ chant from the crowd, which was bleeped out every time. This got pretty annoying. Overall the point of the finish was to end it without burying any of the X-Division stars by not actually putting anyone over (although no one gets buried if it’s an escape finish).

Homicide failed at escaping the cage (as anyone probably would) and dropped back into the ring. The remaining participants ‘came to their senses’ and attacked Homicide, basically having to improvise. Jeff Hardy jumps the barricade and Homicide attacks him. The attack included an unprotected chair shot, which is really not necessary in this day and age of wrestling. Too many reports of brain tissue analysis are coming out that describe horrific effects of constant head trauma from this profession, so hopefully TNA/Homicide/Hardy don’t make a habit of it.

A lot of people complained and nitpicked on various forums and reports I’ve read, about that debut and everything about it, but I really thought it was pretty good considering a lot had to be improvised. Even Mike Tenay had to make an effort to cover up Homicide’s inability to escape the cage: “Oh, now he’s just showing off.” When I watched it live, I thought Tenay caught something that I missed, so I bought it. Effective emergency control on an announcer’s part. Still, if such a mishap can occur so early in your most important broadcast, maybe they should have gone with a regular WRESTLING match, or Ultimate X. Continue reading
